How do you save an .icns file and also have a preview?

When I go to "get info" on my .icns files, there's no preview

This is also happening with most .png files

Some have a little preview up top, while most do not.

The Finder will generate previews for ICNS and PNG files, but the file icon itself may still be generic - it depends on the app you used to create the file. Photoshop for example can include icon previews when saving (I find it mostly useless because the Finder does a better job).

I'm assuming you're talking about the file's icon and not the image preview in the "Preview" area of the Get Info window?

I figured it out!

For anyone who stumbles upon this thread in the future, there's a program called "Pinki" (works with SL). It's very small and will add a thumbnail to any image that doesn't have one.

It's EXTREMELY easy to make icon images now.
