I haven't changed any of my settings, but when i hopped on my iMac today the icons for all my different file types were the generic icons that show what file type they are and what program uses them.

For example all of movies were no longer their respective movie posters and my pictures no longer showed up as the pictures as their icon.

Any idea what may have caused this or how I can change it back?

Go to the folder /YourHardDrive/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and delete the files: com.apple.desktop.plist & com.apple.finder.plist, then reboot.

Fixed it for me, guess I answered my own question.
