Icon/thumbnail hangs on mouse pointer

Sometimes when I drag a picture from, the desktop to a folder (or vise versa)the thumbnail will not release itself when I let go of the left mouse button. It will stay stuck to the mouse pointer and leaves me with no choice but to hit the power button and shutting it down. I try to force quit any programs I am running but with the thumbnail being stuck to the cursor I can't make any selections. About the only thing it will do is open another folder if I hover over it but then again I can't seem to get the thumbnail to release itself. This does not happen allot, just randomly maybe once or three times a month but when it does, it's aggravating and sometimes causing me to loose any unsaved info that I may be working on in another program.
