I have a mac ibook G4. Okay all the icons on my desktop have vanished, including my hard drive icon. I cannot access finder. I cannot open CD's when I put them in the computer. I have no idea of what the problem could be, can anyone help!

Yes I have rebooted on several occasions, it doesn't help. I can view my finder icon on my dock, but it won't open when clicked on.

finder issues

Have you tried repairing permissions? both from running the application local to trying to startup from your OS DVD (CD)?

If you have a copy of DiskWarrior, you may want to try running that as well.

bigus7674, I'm not sure how to go about repairing permissions, how do I do that? I can not open any CD I put in my computer.

GGJstudios, I can still veiw my dock and my top menu bar, It is just the icons that have vanished, restarting doesn't get them back or help in anyway. maybe repairing permissions would help, but I don't know how to do that, I have tried searching for permissions repair on my computer, but it doesn't get any results. I need someone to walk me through step by step.

Finder is not responding at all. How can I view the options if I can not get into finder?

You might try this:
  1. Delete the /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file.
  2. Command-Option-Esc to bring up the Force Quit menu
  3. Select Finder and click Relaunch.

Good point... brain cramp!

  1. If Spotlight still works, use Spotlight to search for Terminal.app
  2. Click on Terminal on the search results list to launch it
  3. In Terminal, type this in a single line, substituting your username where indicated (where indicated in red, type one space, but don't type what's written in red):
    mv (space) /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist (space) /users/yourusername/desktop
  4. Press return after typing the line
  5. Quit Terminal
  6. Reboot.

I used spotlight to find the finder.plist file, I have tried pressing delete and dragging it to the trash, but it won't delete.

Searched for Terminal.app using spotlight and it came up 0 ressults found.

Figured it out

Thanks for everyone's help, I learned how to do a few things. But apparently the mother board is dying, and it's time for a new computer!
