... what a very elegant name for a device !!

This is a simple Raid 0 /1/ JBOD device that will accept 2 x 3,5 SATA HDD's

I have 2 x 3TB Seagate Barracuda's fitted and working well on it's USB3.0
connection.

However, the internal fan noise was just awful, it was like someone doing the
"hoovering" under the desk !!

I ordered a 40mmx40mmx10mm XM1 Blacksilent fan.

This was going to be a breeze, remove fan, cut wires, strip cable, twist, dab
of solder, heat shrink ... reconnect ... DONE :)

However, IcyBox decided to connect their own very "noisy" fan with small bolts
that have some kind of concrete based glue all over the end.

Even with my best pliers and perfectly fitting screw driver, I managed to
completely strip 2 x screws, rendering them useless !!

I had to "Dremel" the bolts off with the cutting disk !

The rest went without a hitch and I have a really quiet fan in there now, held
in by only 2 bolts .... doesn't look so good but I don't have OCD !!

Be warned, if you do this to solve the noise, you may well have problems with
the bolts - evil stuff that i have never delt with before, perhaps there is a
procedure to remove the "green concrete glue" ??

Cheers,
Marty.

Nice DIY ;)

As for the lock seal, likely there's a chemical, but your method is faster (even if it was a PITA). Way to go.

Sorry for dragging up an old post.

How did you find this after the fan change? A lot quieter?
