Hello
I've recently bought my very first Mac and i am now iBook G4 owner with OS X Leopard 10.5.5

I have read about Mac OS 9, Mac OS 8 etc but i have never used any of these old systems.. :( But i would really like to.. I've see some screenshots but that is not enough.. :(

Can i just make a new partition on my iBook HD and install Mac OS 9 for example? And the real question is .. where can i get these old systems?

Please help!

You'd have to buy a copy of OS 9 off ebay or something. I think OS 7 is the latest one Apple have to download. IIRC

Wait a sec.. Are you telling me that i can get OS 7 for free???? Really? Where? :D

There's a how-to on how to run OS9 as a virtual mac with sheep shaver here. System7 would be setup similarly.

System7 (v7.5.3) is available in 19 parts, here, direct from Apple, a gift to us all. How generous of them!

Its way easier to delete a virtual machine than repartition your hard drive. And your iBook will just get cranky if you try to load system7 on it instead of in sheep shaver. :p

OK guys, let's slow it down a little bit..

So i have now downloaded all 19 parts.. how can i make them as one file? and is it really just 20MB system??

Well, according to this, I believe you use a boot disc then install with the 19 parts by clicking on part 1 once you're in.

You may need a rom file, like this one. EDIT: This quadra rom worked for me, where that other rom did not.

Some instructions there are a little different because it was done on windows. Sorry.

Unrelated, congratulations on getting your iBook. They're beautiful.

ROM file?? what's that? Why do i need it and where/how do i use it?

In the memory tab in setup, use the quadra rom. The rom tells the OS that you're using a quadra.

From this point on, I recommend you stop using SheepShaverGUI and instead make manual modifications to the SheepShaver preferences file. You can find the .sheepshaver_prefs file in your home directory. Use terminal to open it:

nano ~/.sheepshaver_prefs

Now it’s a simple case of make yours like mine. Here are the preferences I’ve used:

disk /Users/niels/os9
cdrom /Users/niels/MacOS904Z.iso
extfs /
screen win/1024/768
windowmodes 0
screenmodes 0
seriala
serialb
rom /Users/niels/mac_os_rom_update_1_0.rom
bootdrive 0
bootdriver 0
ramsize 536870912
frameskip 1
gfxaccel true
nocdrom false
nonet false
nosound false
nogui false
noclipconversion false
ignoresegv true
jit true
jit68k false
keyboardtype 5
ether slirp
keycodes false
mousewheelmode 1
mousewheellines 3
dsp /dev/dsp
mixer /dev/mixer
ignoresegv true
idlewait false

Make sure you modify the disk, cdrom and rom values to correspond with the locations of those files on your machine. After you have made the changes you should be able to run SheepShaver, making sure that the MacOS904Z.iso file is not mounted in the Finder. In case you are using physical media, simply remove the cdrom preference.

What is this all about?

That's a hidden file in your home directory. I'd open it in Textedit. If you need to view hidden files in Finder, paste this into Terminal:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true

When you're done with the hidden files, you can paste this into Terminal:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false

Congrats on your Mac QueenZ.
Just an FYI your iBook is too new for these older systems to run natively without additional steps that the others here are helping you with. If for some reason these extra steps don't work out for you, you can get a cheap Mac off ebay to run these systems. It doesn't take much at all to run them as they are pretty old. You can find more info about your Mac here
That site will tell you all you need to know about Mac specs.

Do i really need to have OS 9 on a CD?? Can't it be just a simple .dmg file or something?

OK, so it says:
Make sure that you’re using the 1.9MB New World ROM file.

Where can i get it?

After completing the installation simply restart, you’ll then be presented with the default Mac OS 9 desktop, after which you can continue with installing software and customizing the OS to your needs.

Restart what? My computer or SheepShaver?

Hii!

okay, so I am following all of these instruction and I am not getting anywhere

I would also like to try to run any mac os between 7 and 9 on my PPC Mac Mini 1.25GHz 1gig ram. Is this okay?

Can I have NOOB instructions?

Right now I am trying to get the .sheepshaver_prefs file into terminal. If i drag it into the window and hit enter I get permission denied.

you can open up terminal and type nano ~/.sheepshaver_pres and it will open it with nano text editor the file.

Can someone answer my questions?

hahahaha settle down settle down, sheepsaver is easy to use.

download the ROM, tell sheepsaver which ROM to use, and make sure you have an install CD. you should be set from there.....
