Hello Mac Geniuses,

I have a G5 2.3 - I'd like to upgrade to a 30" screen - do I need to upgrade my graphics card (ATI Radeon 9600 128)?

Thanks!

I can't find any information on the 128MB version. It can't be different to the 256MB. Is this a Pro or XT card?

ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, dual-link DVI for G4/G5 and PC
ATI released Radeon 9600 Pro graphic card with 256MB VRAM and Dual-link DVI display support.

The Radeon 9600 Pro is called the "PC and Mac Edition" because it has both PC and Mac ROM code. It's the first graphics card that's compatible with both. Now mid-range Windows PC users can drive the Dual-Link 30" Cinema LCD display without buying an expensive workstation card like the nVidia Quadro or ATI FireGL.

[Edit] Just checked, the 9600XT doesn't have a Dual Link port. The 9600XT doesn't support the 30"

Rad 9600 XT = ATI Radeon 9600 XT (128MB, DVI + ADC)
Rad 9650 = ATI Radeon 9650 (256MB, Dual Link DVI + DVI)

The Radeon 9650 does support the 30" Cinema display with its one Dual-Link DVI port and has 256MB of DDR memory, but it is actually clocked slower (and runs slower) than the Radeon 9600 XT with 128MB of DDR and a normal DVI port.

So I'd say if you have the Pro version, you'll be good to go.
