Hey y'all, I got a StarTech IDE to SATA drive adapter for my iMac G3 recently and I had some questions about it. I've read multiple reports of this working for people in older PowerPC macs like the all-in-one G3s, but I haven't been able to get it to work.
I have a number of older mechanical HDDs ranging from 40 GB to 4 TB that I've tried in my G3, and I have not gotten OS 9 or OS X Tiger to install properly to any of them. These drives work fine elsewhere, like if I use them with a SATA-USB adapter I have for reading the drives. If other peoples' reports are true and I don't have a borked adapter, I feel like I might just have the jumper stuff set wrong or something.
In addition, while I can boot into OS 9 from a CD and even seemingly partition these drives, the Apple Restore tool in the OS 9 Lives image keeps failing with error -36 halfway. The Tiger DVD installer seems to not even want to boot if there's no valid drive here I imagine, it's stuck eternally loading. (From what little I can find online, error -36 seems to be an IO issue perhaps? Unsurprisingly) Even on the 40 GB drive where I would think there would be no compatibility issues just based on drive size, given the PPC/IDE size limitation here.
Also, I just put the original IDE drive back in, re-partitioned it and installed both OS 9 and Tiger in a dual boot config with no issues. So I don't think the disc drive (which I used to install them) or IDE cable is the issue. Seems like it's gotta be a faulty adapter or I have its config set wrong.
Does anyone else have this adapter working properly in an iMac G3? Can you say if the HDD/adapter needs to be set to cable/slave/master on this? How do you have the separate power cable plugged in (if at all)? Any extra details will help greatly thanks.
