Is there a way i can identify an apple product number via serial number?

how about the actual components, such as hard drive model #, etc?

i have an iMac G4 and I don't know which one. when apple says 20 inch display, does that mean total measurements of the monitor or just the actual screen space?

That should be the diagonal length of the screen.

For example, from the bottom-left to the top-right. Just the screen. Don't measure the casing around the side of it.

finding mac part info is like discovering buried treasure.

I'm trying to avoid resorting to asking for the answer, so i'm trying to figure it out myself, but i don't want to get the wrong part. say you had an imac g4 with a dead HD. naturally, you want to replace it with a larger one, right? so after you Identify the machine model number, what's the next step? Are there any sites like ifixit.com for desktops?
