Idris Elba will develop and produce television series and films for Apple TV+ through his production company Green Door Pictures after striking a first-look deal with the streaming service, according to Deadline.

Elba is known for his award-winning performance as John Luther in the BBC psychological crime drama series "Luther," as well as roles in the HBO drama "The Wire" and the Fast & Furious film "Hobbs & Shaw." Fans of NBC sitcom "The Office" will also remember Elba for his brief role as Charles Miner, Vice President of the Northeast Region.

Apple TV+ has reached similar production deals with Oprah Winfrey, Alfonso Cuarón, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ridley Scott, and many others.

Idris Elba is a great actor, but hopefully Apple is learning that producing content other networks won't produce doesn't directly translate into producing content that people want to watch. Greyhound was amazing, but I think they bought it after it was already produced. Producers given too much freedom has translated into dry/slow-paced content, often without a payoff for audiences who sat through it. Hopefully Elba has something good cooking for Apple+.

I got Apple TV+ when I took my iPhone X in for out-of-warranty service because of a swollen battery; $90Cdn later I had a brand new iPhone X, an additional 90 days of warranty, and 1 year of Apple TV+. Sweet. I believe Apple was fully aware it would be basically giving the service away for a year while they built up content. Seriously, duh!

My favourite show on Apple TV+ so far has been Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet. The bonus "Quarantine" episode is actually one of my favourite episodes of any series for some time. If Elba cannot top that I will be surprised. In any case the quality of the programming on Apple TV+ is excellent, the money is definitely going onscreen, even if not every show is my cup of tea. Well, I like punk, you like country western, why would we imagine all shows would appeal to us equally, right?

[Off-topic] I never get the editorial style/custom in English of moving the punctuation marks inside the quote, as in "Luther,", and "Hobbs & Shaw.", counterintuitive IMHO.
Ok, so since we are off topic, I absolutely agree. I have always used the British style where if the punctuation (specifically periods and commas, other punctuation is treated rationally by all) is part of the quotation then it goes inside the mark but if it is not it goes outside. Being in Canada where the American style mostly dominates I am forever in conflict with editors of my writing. It is a hill I will die on. I agree, the American style makes little sense and is, in fact, counterintuitive (as you said) and confusing. Now I am imagining all of the likes we will both get for discussing punctuation in this thread...

I met Idris Elba on 42nd st in Manhattan about 4 years ago. We walked past each other and I turned and said hey! The next james bond! Congratulations Mr. Elba! He turned and smiled, stuck his hand out to me, and said thanks.

Seemed like a very down to earth nice guy. Wish him the best.

It’s been a standard for decades/centuries. iirc it’s mostly due to how it looks when typeset. The comma, period or other punctuation mark tucks in underneath the close quote and avoids the awkward look of a punctuation mark hanging out there in space.

Or it’s just easier to throw it inside lol.

When I was a student I was very careful and precise with punctuation. Out here in a world where people use “less” when the correct word would be “fewer,” I have grown forgetful and imprecise and find myself sticking punctuation marks where I think they look good. I’m usually quite wrong from a grammatical standpoint.

Getting back to the topic, I have been pleasantly surprised by the few Apple TV series I’ve watched so far. They’re not quite the family-friendly shows I had originally hoped for and expected. But I’ve enjoyed them and hope someone of Elba’s caliber brings something else worth my time.

I hope the content is good, for apples sake. I have no plans of renewal after my year expires.

I agree. I'm a stickler for "correct" punctuation; and I usually get it right, intuitively. But I always get this one "wrong" in my first drafts. This rule makes little sense.

Idris Elba is a great actor, at least in other people’s work, but I do wish Apple would just stop this obsession with celebrity. It’s gotten out of control under Cook and just screams of desperation to be relevant.

Not all actors make good producers or directors, just seems to be the way that those who have some success (and thus are financially able to indulge in what amounts to a busman’s hobby) want to try their hand on the other side of the lens. It doesn’t always or even often translate to quality content, as there’s no-one to give constructive criticism. Vanity projects mostly.

On the small screen at least (so no shouts for Clint Eastwood), name me one actor/actress that has produced/directed something of note? I won’t hold my breath...

Then make another list of recent TV hits, from GoT to Peaky Blinders etc. Then see if you can name the writer/producer/director. Exactly.

AN AMAZING ACTOR!! Luther is one of my all time favorite TV series.

Apple keeps poaching the greatest acting/directing/producing talent of our generation. I can't imagine the level of output TV+ will have in a few years from now. Incredible.

Hopefully Apple will pull TV+ by the time Idris comes up with anything.
Wow. A comment dissing Apple TV+ for no reason each and every single time Apple TV+ is mentioned. I hope Apple TV+ becomes a Netflix-killer in the next five years and you have to look back at all these posts.

Good to hear. I can tell you that he's a very solid techno producer and DJ as well. I saw him here in Austin back in November and didn't even know he was a techno/tech-house producer/DJ and he absolutely tore it up. I was pleasantly shocked. In fact, I would love to see a documentary about him.

This rollout has been far worse than HBO Max, but has flown under the radar, because most people are getting it for free right now. I couldn't imagine paying for it.
