Is there any way to alter the preset themes or to create your own theme?

Click on the Theme button, then on the Customize button... you can alter almost anything you want there....

I want to change the shape of the buttons to a custom shape. Is that possible?

Nope.. I just checked it out... I guess Apple wanted to keep it simple... it is an iApp, so...
