I just got my PC's old DVD writer to work in a USB enclosure using PatchBurnII. Then I got iDVD to work using the "put 2 files in your home folder" hack. (I couldn't burn directly from iDVD I had to save off an image and burn it using Disk Utility.)

It worked wonderfully, what I want to know is how long will this last. Is Apple really gonna "fix" this in their next release? Any ideas?

nothing is broken
you dont have a superdrive or internal DVD drive? buy one from apple.
dont have a mac that can use iDVD? buy a new mac from apple.

this is apples attitude. With them now selling iLife I think that they should allow external dvd burners to be used. BUT - if they dont give it to you - keep hoping for DVD Studio Pro Express .....

But the thing is, with this hack you can use an external drive. What I was wondering is if Apple will ever actively patch this.
