HELP... It's driving me NUTS !!!
I have this same problem today, 2 years after an original posting describing the same issue (apparently unresolved on last thread).
All the photos I drag & Drop into Drop Zones in iDVD 7.0.4 end up HUGE. You can only see a micro amount of the image e.g. just one eye of a portrait. I can't find anyway of shrinking them either.
I have tried downsizing them to tiny files before dragging and dropping them into drop zone.
I have tried importing from iPhoto AND dragging and dropping directly from a file in a folder (from no specific app).
BTW, I also can't move the photo around using the 'command' click and hold option suggested by 'Bobinwisc' in a previous thread either... not that it would be a big help as the images are so HUGE, you would only see one eye of a person in the photo even if I could reposition it.
PLEASE HELP !
Using iDVD 7.0.4 on an iMac Mac OS X 10.5.8

I STILL have not found a solution... I just had to make my own Personalised Theme and use that instead. It is all very dissapointing !:(

You know what's REALLY irritating about this problem? It worked just fine in iLife '05. You could click on any image in any drop zone and resize it right within iDVD. No resizing in other programs.

What moron let this important feature either get removed or so completely screwed up that nobody can figure out how to do it? What happened to the simple, intuitive interface?

Solution (Maybe)

Probably a bit late for most people that were on this thread but, I've just had the same issue.
Sizing my images at 640 x 480 Pixels (300dpi) seems to work - IDVD then fits them to the drop zone.
