I have some .mp4 files I've downloaded from Google Video. They're only in "iPod" quality and in any case I don't have any burnable DVDs. I want to burn them so I can watch them on an ordinary DVD player. As I understand it, most DVD players are okay if you just dump .mpg files onto an ordinary CD, but my two obstacles are that the files aren't current in .mpg format and the Finder burns weird HFS format CDs — great for Mac to Mac file transfers or backups, useless for everything else.

Is there any way I can do this with iMovie? Something like just setting Video CD as a target would be perfect but the name alone implies I probably can't do that. At the least is it possible to subvert one of the two apps to produce either an ISO or a .mpg for me?

After that I know I can download the UNIX mkiso (if necessary) and cdrtools packages to burn an ordinary CD, but obviously I'd rather avoid that if I can.

Failing all that, is there any free third party software that can help me? I'm not really interested in buying software because buying writeable DVDs will almost certainly be cheaper!

My computer is a MacBook Pro if that helps with recommendations.
