idvd3 won't background encode

i have idvd3 (still) i've used it twice to burn about 30 min long dvds with little or no problem. now i'm burning another dvd, about 30 min long again and whenever i try to burn the dvd it stops as soon as it gets to step3: asset encoding. i get an error during rendering/encoding box and cannot finish burning the dvd. it also appears not to be encoding in the background even with background encoding enabled. i seem to remember the other dvd's encoding in the background. please help me with this i need it done by tomorrow evening.
