Apple didn't magically create twice the amount of manufacturing factories. They had to split up their existing resources to create the 5C. If the 5C didn't exist, would the 5S be in ample supply today since their full force would be producing the 5S? In that case, is the 5C a waste of time?

I don't know about ample stock, but I think that there would definitely be more stock. If it is true that there have been 5S production problems due to the fingerprint sensor, then I think Apple will have looked at the production possibilities to see what would potentially give them more income. For example, let's say that 25% of production this month has been the 5S and 75% the 5C. If Apple had thought that 75% 5S and 25% 5C would only make them twice as many 5S as are currently available due to issues in the 5S, I don't think they'd do it, instead focusing on volume with the 5C and trying to shift them at the current price point.
