I know many disagree, and I can completely understand why, but AOD does not matter to me one iota. I actually kind of like having it off except when I want it on. The compass could be nice, but I can’t imagine how infrequently I’d use it in the real world.

Sooo...

Apple has the Stainless Steel 44mm S4 refurbished for $589. The SS S5 is $749

Sooo...

For those who have had both the S4 and now have the S5, if AOD and compass don’t matter, are there any other ways in which the S5 is updated or superior to the S4?

Many thanks!

No. There is no discernible difference between the 4 and 5. I have both.

I’ll go one step further and say that bigger fonts don’t matter either if you have decent eyes. Go for a Series 3.

Well, you can load double the music on the Series 5. It’s a moot point if you have an LTE watch but could be a big deal if you don’t pay for cellular.

The reality is you already made your decision, you don’t _need_ the Series 5 if you’re not interest in the always on display or the new titanium casing material, opt for the Series 4 through Apple, which still includes a one-year warranty.

The only thing that hasn't been mentioned is the S5 has more storage if you like having a music collection on your watch. I've had the S4 and S5 and if AOD wasn't something I cared about I would have stuck with my S4. I love my S5 and AOD was hugely important to me.

I think you’re right. I was just making sure that there were no other features. I was just curious if—after people had time to dig into it—additional difference might have been discovered.

I hadn’t thought about the extra storage. I really don’t see that benefiting me all that much. I’ve got a dozen or so pictures on mine, and maybe 100 songs. Haven’t checked the space I have left, but that’s something I should do before deciding. I have a SSS5 re-packaged and ready to be returned, as well as two refurbished SSS4’s (gold for wife and plain for me) arriving today.

As for AOD, it’s a bit crazy. Having the display go off is what bothered me most about the original AW. Now I’m so accustomed to it, I think I prefer it now. I’m in meetings multiple times daily and have mastered the technique of rolling my wrist or tapping my watch to see the time. I totally understand why most people would prefer AOD though.

I have an identical S5 to the S4 I previously had. If those things don't bother you, then they are basically identical, no point in having the 5. For me, AOD is the one thing I've always wanted in this watch, you've no idea how useful it's been when sitting at my desk or in a meeting and just quickly glancing at my wrist. It's something I've wanted ever since I had an AW and I didn't expect them to launch it, so I was pleasantly surprised. I upgraded purely for that, but if that didn't bother me, I was completely happy with my S4.

I had my first meeting with it yesterday. I was internally laughing as I was taking discreet glances at the watch where as before I'd be doing the discreet wrist roll.

I didn't care about AOD, either, but upgraded to an S5 from my S3 instead of an S4, anyway. Just cuz.

Turns out, I was surprised by the number of times I glanced at my watch without turning my wrist. I figured it would come in handy every great once in a while, but it's been more than that so far. And yeah, I could just flick my wrist. I think I'd just rather not, now.

The issue is sometimes I try to do something when the screen is on but not *on* on.

And I swipe up or down, and nothing happens. So I have to tap on it to activate it, then swipe up or down again. It gets a bit annoying because I'm now having to think of whether it's *on* on or just on. (say what?!)

Yes!! My brain sees the time and thinks the dim screen is on but nothing happens when I swipe to change watch faces. I have to tap first to wake it up.

I am really liking AOD, but I have wanted it forever. But yeah, if you don't care about it, or prefer not to have yet, I would go for the cheaper series 4 for sure.
