When the new iPhone comes out I will be able to upgrade to the new iPhone at the upgrade price. So I will have my old iPhone 3G. If I give my old iPhone 3G to my girlfriend will she have to pay for a data plan even if she doesn't want one?

From my understanding ATT subsides the iPhone since you are paying the extra $30 a month for the data plan.

So as long as she owns the iPhone when signing up for ATT can she just get a normal plan and block all internet access to her account?

Also keep in mind that it is a 2yr. contract. The 3G iPhone just came out last year. Usually the earliest you can get the subsidized pricing is 18months.

I just don't understand why?

If I own the phone how is the iPhone any different then say a basic flip phone that has no data plan?

It shouldn't matter to ATT what phone I'm using as long as I own the phone in full.

Guess you'll need to ask AT&T why. But I've read the same thing - if you have a 3G iPhone, no service without a data plan.
