I'd like to buy a new MacBook Air today but I know Mavericks is coming out soon. If I buy it today, will I get a free upgrade? How Apple handled this in the past??

Thanks!

The answer is a definite "maybe". When Apple announces the actually release date for Mavericks, they will also announce the details of the "Up To Date" program. It's not always the same, but any computer you buy within 30 days of Mavericks release should get a free upgrade and it could be earlier than 30 days before Mavericks release.

Since people are expecting Mavericks to be released at the end of this month or early next month you will probably qualify for a free upgrade.I say probably because Mavericks could be delayed or Apple might (but unlikely) do the up to date program differently.

There are also some thoughts around that Mavs might be free for all; Especially, now that Windows 8.1 is a free upgrade.

Again, these are only rumors and we all need to wait and watch .. when its released ..

I know, but $20 here, $20 there.. I can definitely save some money.
Well if you don't need the new Mac today and you don't want to have to risk spending what Mavericks will cost, why don't you wait until Apple announces what the up to date program covers?

Exactly. That's why I'm asking. I might be able to wait. Thanks for all the responses.

A potential high-priced mac buyer worried about another 20 bucks. These posts always crack me up. :D

2 things about your post. 1) Apple doesn't make decisions based on what Microsoft does and 2) Unlike Windows 8.1 being just an update to 8.0, Mavericks is not an update to Mountain Lion. It's a complete OS upgrade point release.

Does (or did in the past) this program apply to refurbished Macs also? I want to buy a 27" iMac from the Apple refurbished store.

They usually allow this. I believe my computer was entitled prior to Lion even being announced. Getting the free update code was a whole new story though. A complete utter mess.
