if i buy the new iphone 3g, what happens to my currect contract? (o2)

i bought an 8gb iphone in o2 on the day of release in the uk, i am 8 months into the 18 months contract, if i buy the new iphone 3g what happens? do i need to do a new contract and pay for both or can i switch the number and put my contract onto that phone?
