iCloud If I Check Photos Stored in iCloud on My Mac, Does It Auto Save Them in My Mac?

Hello guys. I am an iCloud noob.

OK so most of my photos in iCloud are from my iPhone. I hardly have pics on my Mac.

But I do check my iCloud pics using my Mac. Next thing I know, my Mac has 88GB of photos that are from my iCloud. Does it really auto save natively if I check them? Is there a way to share iCloud in my Mac without downloading the photos?
