Since the sim-free Mini is $30 more than a Verizon phone, I'm curious....

If I order the Verizon version, take out the new sim card before I turn on the phone, and just put in my old sim card (that I know will work since it works on a 12P), will I avoid the activation fee?

I'd rather give money to Apple than my carrier, but if at all possible, I'd like to skip the charge for something I don't need. (Let me just step around that rabbit hole that is I don't "need" a new phone.)

Its just $30 but you can always call loyalty department and try to get it waived,? So all iphone 12s from Apple are $30 more than from carriers.

That’s how I understood it too. For years, I’ve bought unlocked phones and just switched SIM cards, charge-free. I’ve liked that. :)
