was thinking about getting a smart cover and just a invisible shield on the back which would add not much weight? how much would the smart cover add though?

so according to that thread my ipad would weigh 102 grams more then it currently is so would probably not be noticeable then?

I just switched from an iPad 3 + Smart Cover to an iPad Air + Smart Cover. To me, the weight difference between the two is pretty noticeable.

As for the iPad Air naked against the iPad Air + Smart Cover, to me, it's a slight difference. If I'm reading for along period of time, taking the Smart Cover off is noticeable. But for 99% of my day, it doesn't feel like the Smart Cover adds much weight. IMO, this is why they made the new Smart Cover from the lighter polyurethane vs. the heavier leather. :)

+1

For me, I was really disappointed in the weight of the Smart Case when I got it home, but it looks sharp and its probably still combined lighter than my iPad 4 so I'll live

To me, none. I have the red smart cover with my iPad air. Very light, and it's convinced me to get a slim back case instead of a folio arrangement.

The weight of the ipad is ~470 grams
A smart cover of 102 grams add 22% of the weight back.

That's not nothing....nor is it imperceptible.

It adds some weight, enough to make you notice it. But you gotta figure the iPad Air is so light anyways, you're already ahead in the tablet weight game anyways.

The Smart Cover is like adding a 5s to the Air...but without being able to make a phone call. :D Since there aren't any good lighter alternatives, not much to do. I tend to take these things off when I'm home, and only use them for protection in transit.
