If I get iPhone 4 and go abroad

Can I just take the iPhone data plan off and just pay the 10 a month for the line even though I'm not using it (on a family plan) rather than pay for the line and iPhone data plan I won't be using... Going to use prepaid sims when in Europe with what I hope will be my unlocked 3gs or an unlocked Nokia of some sort.
