Meaning, can I still download apps from the App Store, I dont see why not but just making sure.

Also, I jailbroke my first gen iphone last year and it was always tricky around firmware update time. How is it now?

App store works the same. If you jailbreak and a new firmware comes out you can either keep the firmware you have or wait for the new firmware to be pwned. Cydia on 2.1 is better than installer ever was on 1.1.4. Definately work the jailbreak. Use quickpwn. Its easy as hell. Good Luck
