if I order 16 Pro and have it shipped it to a family member in Illinois, which sales tax does Apple charge online?(6% for my state or 10% for IL?)

also, it's going to be a birthday gift.... so how accurate is the estimated delivery day shown on the order page on Apple's website? Obviously I don't want it to arrive too late, but I also don't want it to arrive way too early.

Thanks!

It is likely going to be the sales tax to the states that you are delivering it to. So it would be the 10%. It doesn't matter what card you use, they base it on the delivery address.

Sales tax is tied to the destination, not the payment method. So you'll be charged Illinois sales tax.

A funny way this manifests for me personally: There are six Apple stores within an hour's drive of where I live, in all directions. If I order something on Apple.com, and have it shipped directly to me, that's once price. If I order something on Apple.com and have it shipped to one of those six stores for pickup, the price will be different for each store since here in Colorado, our state sales tax is relatively low, but then each municipality and often each county have their own hyper-local sales taxes. The difference is minimal, as an absolute percentage, but it does add up for something expensive like a high-end MacBook Pro. it can swing the final price one way or another by $20 or more.

Apple's delivery estimates are generally conservative. They tend to beat the estimate, or hit it at the early end of a date range. But obviously, there's no guarantee.

If your goal is to both save tax, and nail a more exact delivery date, you'd be better off buying it locally ASAP (based on local availability) then shipping it to your family member yourself. But then the money you save on taxes you'll end up spending on shipping, so... o_O

I decided to order it with delivery to my home. I was going to ship a card and an additional gift(hiking boots) anyway, so adding the iPhone inside the package wouldn't cost that much more. Although I guess I'll have to add a few bucks for insurance. :)

I thought New York sales tax was bad…geez.

sorry, my bad... just looked it up.. it's not 10%. it's 10.25% for Chicago where she lives!!!???

  • Tacoma, Washington (10.3%)
  • Chicago, Illinois (10.25%)
  • Fremont, California (10.25%)
  • Long Beach, California (10.25%
  • Oakland, California (10.25%)
  • Seattle, Washington (10.25%)
  • Birmingham, Alabama (10%)
  • Baton Rouge, Louisiana (9.95%)
  • Memphis, Tennessee (9.75%)
  • St. Louis, Missouri (9.679%+)
