Will my upgrade go away?

My family has 3 upgrades on 12-28-12 but 4 people in my family want to upgrade, if I sell my 4S and pay $649 + tax for the new iphone, will I lose my 12-28-12 upgrade date, or will I still be there for somebody else in my family to use?

Because that's how much the 4S 16GB costs off-contract. I imagine it will be the same this year.

No, you are fine. If you pay full price, then you aren't using the upgrade.

I'm in the UK, and i'm planning on buying the 5 sim free and signing a 12-month sim only deal.

I am therefore free to assess my options when the 5S or whatever they call it comes next year.

Your upgrade won't be effected because they are not giving you anything, as in they are not subsiding your handset. When you upgrade, you're more likely than not paying a small fee for the device up front then paying the rest off in installments over the lifetime of your contract. They ain't bothered what you do with your phone since you paid full price for it.

If you use more than 5gb a month, then it's worth it to just pay the full price for the phone and keep unlimited. That assumes you're on Verizon..which I hope you are because AT&T sucks...

I've been spoiled by VZW's 4G LTE. :D

Question #7,384 about pricing, policy for the iphone that has not been announced.

How do folks think anyone has the answer to something not announced?

How is that something none of us can answer? The OP was asking if paying full price would use their upgrade or not. That's not something that can only be answered when the new iPhone is revealed.

Because Apple has a history of not changing prices during generational upgrades? Actually, the iPhone has fallen in price, so if anything, these are conservative estimates. The original price of the iPhone 2g was $400 for 8GB and $500 for 16GB.

Check out giffgaff, they probably have better deals: 250 minutes, unlimited texts, unlimited internet, £10 a month, no contract. If you need more minutes you can pay extra.

PM me and I'll send you a link which gives you a free SIM with £5 free credit. The mods have told me I'm not allowed to post it on the forums.

OP,
Think of it like this: you get a discounted price in exchange for signing on for 2 more years. When you elect to pay full price, you're not using up that opportunity for a discount (your "upgrade").

heard a lot about Giff Gaff. I know they are using O2's network, but do they support o2-exclusive services such as visual voicemail and call merging?

AT&T LTE (Phoenix)

... and at least we have an HSPA+ network to fall back on.

Without tethering, that speed is worthless. Again, once you hit enough speed to stream video on your phone, anything extra is waste. The only exception is with tethering - something unlimited Verizon users can get.
