If I read Gmail via Mail app on Iphone, is it marked as read on iMac?

Do I have to "read" the email in my iphone AND on imac in order for it to be marked as read, or does it do it automatically?

ie, i check my mail at the grocery store, go home and the email I got will be marked as read? ie not new?

If you have Gmail and your email clients set up to use IMAP.

Gmail is an IMAP account for the iPhone, so yes, when you open something, it’ll show as opened on your iMac.
