I jailbroke my ipod touch a while ago back on update 1.1.3 or something and have never updated anything else because I'm scared it will mess it all up

Can I update itunes? and apple software update? Or just one?

It won't be messed up. Update iTunes to 8.0.2 and buy the $9 Software Upgrade. Then let iTunes install 2.2 firmware on the iPod. Once it's done, download QuickPwn. Open it, and follow the instructions. Oh, but you will lose your data/content unless you do a backup on iTunes.

Well I like the way my ipod is now

I'm just asking if I update to itunes 8.0.2, will it ruin my ipod touch? Like will I be forced to update it?

I just want the new itunes but not if it means messing up my jailbroken ipod

the simple and short answer is no

it won't mess the iPod up as your not putting anything on the iPod your just updating iTunes on your pc or mac.

updating to latest firmware will loose your current jailbreak and data on the iPod, a simple quickpwn will have you up and running on a fresh jailbreak within 5 minutes
