If I want to do a fresh install of ML, do I have to install Lion first then upgrade?

My iMac is a 2011 that initially came with Lion installed. I have backup discs made of Lion and Mountain Lion. My question is, if I want to do an erase and fresh install, do I have to start with what my Mac shipped with, or can I just insert the Mountain Lion install disc and go from there.
