be activated ? does this mean we would need iCloud to activate iphone? I hope this is a good question...

When you turn on your iDevice for the first time, you will be greeted with the new Set-up screen (No PC required), then iOS will guide you through the activation process.

when you turn on the phone it walks you through setting up the iPhone right on the phone itself. It gets activated and you have the option to sign up for an iCloud account to back up all your settings but you don't have to.

But if we get it by mail than do we need connection to use it or does this mean we can use the iphone right away without having to use the service.. so confused

No PC required, just turn on your device and then you will be required to activate your phone directly from the phone.

here is a better video
