Never thought it would happen to me.
I have been holding off on AirPod Max’s. I don’t need them, but if I found a decent deal on a USB C pair, I would pick them up. $500 is just so steep in my opinion to use 5-6 times a year on the plane.

Browsing FB marketplace 1.5 weeks ago I came across a sealed pair for sale for $200. Asked great questions, the seller sent me the serial number and I was able to verify it on apple check coverage. It checked out. Serial matched the sticker on the box.

The seller originally wanted Zelle or Apple Pay. Red flag. I said I would only buy via PayPal goods and services. They signed up for PayPal to allow me to pay. Red flag number 2.

My order finally showed up today, but came from CA, not NY were the seller was. Odd. Opened the box and it was a sealed Chinese cheap headphone box. I opened that box and there was a sealed box for AirPods Max usb c. The box looked decent until you opened it. Not Apple quality inside, the box was cheap.

Opened the apple box and inside there was a pair of headphones, I could instantly tell they were fake, but overall look pretty good to be honest. No one would know they are fake unless you listen to them. Or push the button/turn the crown. Cheap.

They have the correct screws, headband isn’t flimsy, they show in in find my. They have noise cancellation. Cups are metal and they have good weight to them. They have the hole for the ear piece removal. The L and R lettering on the cups looks correct.

I opened a case against the seller and he refunded me my money. PayPal says my refund is on the way.

Be very very careful. These fakes look pretty good. Crazy. I will be thankful I’m getting a refund and will stick with my AirPod pro 2s.

Lots of fakes on eBay, as well. Sellers will claim they "got it as a birthday present, but I don't want it". Amazon seems to be the best place and they're often discounted.

Why not dispute with Paypal? That's the beauty of it.

If find my and sn were verified. Maybe its 2nd hand with no original box.

It's become commonplace in Manhattan, in areas (particularly in areas where tourists congregate like Canal Street in Chinatown) to see groups of Senegalese men selling Apple AirPodMax and other Apple products on the sidewalk in sealed boxes that appear very real. This is a very common scam done out in the open that has been going on for years, but nobody seems too interested in stopping it, including it would seem Apple, which has little incentive to protect people buying their stuff through "unofficial" channels from fraud pour encourager les autres.
