Perhaps surprisingly, it is not just slick or clever advertising that makes a product sell, not over the long term.
Great advertising will only work to a certain extent, and above all, not mask an awful product forever.
In the case of Apple, yes, they packaged their image as one of rarefied connoisseurs of a series of esoteric devices, but they got away with it - and were able to continue to perpetuate it - because firstly, the computers actually looked great, - they were designed beautifully which made them a pleasure to use - and secondly, they worked extremely well. (And thirdly, they tended to offer excellent customer service).
