IF (key word IF) the iPhone Fold has following drawbacks, would that cause anyone on the forum to pause and stick with the Pro Max for the next few years until the iPhone Fold series matures?
  • Much higher base purchase price at a minimum of $2,000, possibly up to $2,400.
  • Lower capacity battery at 4,400mAh or less
    • Apple might pass on silicon carbide for something they are familiar with in lithium ion, in the same way Samsung just did with the Fold 7, due to possible scaling issues with production or other potential issues such as expansion while charging or longevity concerns
  • Less physical room due to thinness so lower quality cameras and speakers than Pro Max
  • 3rd party software and apps won’t be optimized for at least 6-12 months after launch
  • Less physical space to let heat dissipate and not overheat in summertime sun
  • More scratch-able “folding glass” in case debris is in your pocket that gets in between inner screen
  • Inner screen possible having a crease, no matter how minimal rumors make it out to be
  • Higher AppleCare+ and out of warranty repair costs
I know there are some who want the new toy feeling regardless of cost or drawbacks, but just wanted to get your thoughts 🙂

Yes, I expect all that to be true for the first year product and I will get it day one as long as the other rumours are somewhat true (around 9 mm thick when folded, 7.6-7.8” inner display around 4:3 aspect ratio and so on).

All of your points are acceptable but the price. It will be about £1,800 for the base model i reckon.

Just curious what about the fold makes you want to get it as a 1st generation product? Is it the excitement of a new product line? Or do you feel it will allow you increased productivity / enjoyment? Or a combination of reasons?

Ah, I see. Yeah I could potentially see them keeping it at $2,000 / £1,800 to try and entice people to get hooked on the new form factor and not have too much sticker shock. I just remember Apple also going well above what forum members thought would be acceptable prices on new product launches like the Vision Pro, iPhone X, iPad Pro 13, etc.

Yes I would definitely stick with my Pro Max for the next couple years.

Ah, I see. Of the downsides above is there a one that sticks out more than the rest? I know for me it’s software / apps.

I think foldables are a perfect match, big screen in your pocket that takes small space. I also find it cool to fold my screen and put it in my pocket.

Had Samsung Folds before but have decided I prefer iOS so I am counting the days until Apple releases theirs.

I’ve been carrying both an iPhone Mini and an iPad Mini wherever I go for years, doing 95% of everything on the iPad Mini……this is exactly what I’ve been waiting for to become a happy one-device guy.

That is something I agree with, although I don’t carry my iPad Mini with me everywhere I always loved them. Instead I’ve been “forced” to carry an iPhone Pro Max in my pocket just to have a decently sized display when I need it.

And with the rumours pointing to Apples foldable being both smaller than my Pro Max in my pocket as well as being as big as the iPad Mini 5 when unfolded it would be the best of both worlds.

These two are the biggest sticking points for me. It will take me seeing a truly crease free folding screen to believe it.

Let the consumer buy what they want. I can already see a hatred for the Apple foldable because it does not follow Steve Job’s plan. Get over it. Steve has been gone for a while now.

Personally, I just like trying new things, even if there are drawbacks. I think the new Fold 7 looks great but still not fond of Android.

I have a Pixel 9 Pro as a work phone and it hasn't made me wanting to use Android as a primary phone at all (though Samsung's flavor is fairly customized).

I'm excited to see what Apple does for this segment and I'm jumping in immediately when they release a foldable.

I will happily stick to Pro Max up until around the 3rd iteration of Fold.
I want to avoid first and second generation issues.
When it comes to iPhone the 3rd generation, 3GS was exactly what the 1st gen should have been.

I don't care anything about Steve Jobs' plan, I just think it's going to be an awkward phone and don't see any benefit for me. Too small with more limited viewing/working space when folded, too large and difficult to type on when unfolded. The keyboard, when unfolded, seems like it's going to be an oddity where it's too small for regular touch typing and too spaced out for thumb typing.

More options is better, and more power to the people who see benefits in it and want one - it's just not for me. Especially if the current rumors about pricing are true.

For me the biggest drawback, if the rumors are true will be the lack of a telephoto lens and FaceID. That being said, I would consider buying it.

Have always had my eye on the Galaxy Fold and have been waiting a long time for a foldable from Apple. Would not mind if Apple is releasing both a Galaxy Flip and a Fold type foldable device, but considering that only one is happening, I am glad that they are going ahead with a Fold type device.

The crease is totally off putting to me, so they’d genuinely need to have solved that. I have spent a little bit of time with last years Galaxy Fold and the new Oppo, and I cannot stand the crease. I don’t like the feel of either of those screens, irrespective of the crease. I’m also not really sold on the foldout screen/form factor, and find them clunky to use. I much prefer the Flip form factor.

We will put you down as a “Maybe” on the foldable.

  • Much higher base purchase price at a minimum of $2,000, possibly up to $2,400.
- I refuse to pay more than $1500 for a phone, especially one that has not been out on the market and has been tested by the masses.
  • Less physical room due to thinness so lower quality cameras and speakers than Pro Max
- I refuse to purchase a phone with a camera system less than the camera setup on the Pro Mac, especially if it costs more than the Pro Max.

  • More scratch-able “folding glass” in case debris is in your pocket that gets in between inner screen
- I will not be using a case on any of my phones going forward, so if I were to purchase a folding iPhone, I would expect a screen that would prevent debris getting in between the inner screen, so if it can not prevent this, this would be a deal breaker for me.

For me it depends mostly on its size when folded, the outer display and camera lenses/sensors.

So, with these IFs, it‘s a no.

As an artist, the iPad & Apple Pencil are my most productive tools. I have both an iPad Pro as my main digital sketchbook & an iPad mini 7 for when I really wanna travel light. It’s the perfect size digital sketchbook when on the go. I would only think about getting foldable iPhone over an iPad mini if you could use the Apple Pencil Pro with it and if the screen had no annoying crease when unfolded. Otherwise, I’ll just stick with my iPhone Pro Max for a phone and the iPad mini for a portable digital sketchbook.

That’s true about the crease getting in the way of using the Pencil. I think if Apple doesn’t get rid of the crease completely, then they probably won’t give it Pencil support.
