From what the rumor mill is describing it seems as if the shel might be resistant to scratches.

Screen protectors only prevent it from scratching. A drop will crack the screen somehow even with a screen protector.

i've used a case and dropped the phone and no damage to anything. i risked not using a case, and loved the case-less iPhone better, dropped that and still no damage.

no case is the way to go.

I use some case they sell at the AT&T store for my 3g. The guy at the store dropped his phone multiple times, to show that it protected it. It's a bit of a thick case, but I do feel as if my phone is well-protected.

I'd use a case with any iPhone I have.

I'm not going to upgrade, though. Nothing wrong with my current 3g.

Depends honestly. If the form factor is compliant with 3G cases, then yes. Otherwise, I don't want to shell out another $40 on a case.

This is the case I'm talking about.

I usually use a case for a few months then remove it. Cases add bulk to the phone and protects it. But the iPhone looks so much better without a case.

When the phone doesn't cost $600 to replace I'll quit using a case. Even if it doesn't completely protect it from a major fall it doesn't hurt and it definately keeps little bumps and daily use from showing any wear. That might come in handy soon when I'm selling my phone on eBay to upgrade and I can advertise it as mint condition (unless there's cracks but that's a different issue). I use a screen protector too. My last phone got a scratch on the screen and I really hated living with it until I upgraded phones.

I prefer holding the iPhone without a case. It's made to be that way and feels much better in your hand.

I use that case myself, the only thing i dont like about it is the difficulty i have pulling it out of tight pockets. a hardshell case is better in that regard. but ive dropped my phone and it does a fantastic job protecting it. overall, id say its a good pick

wrong...a lot of cases will prevent a cracked screen if you drop it. A little rubber case wont prevent a cracked screen but some of the nice leather and hard plastic cases will

Wrong. Leather and hard plastic will not stop the glass from shattering if the phone falls on its screen. The only way it could do that is if it covers the screen, which would make the phone unusable. 0.000001% of cases cover the screen.

If the Apple logo is still shiny, the only thing I will do is cut a piece of Bodyguardz plastic film to fit over the "Apple" to prevent it from scratching. No case here.

I used to have my Incase Slider on my 36 to prevent it from scratching, but I hide the overall appeal of the phone (plus it caused some scratches as well).

I tend not to use it anymore, since I'm very careful with it now. But if there is a new matte finish, I'm using no case so I can show it off when I buy it.

If it's a rubbery and durable matte finish then no. If it's matte plastic similar to a black MacBook then probably.
