They might as well screw the developers while theyre at it and increase the screen size both ways. Not just vertically. I actually couldnt care less about the dock connector. But if they are willing to make everyones accessories obsolete then why would they care so much about the developers having to recode their apps? Fragmentation? Does anybody really give a damn? I think most people want a bigger screen by now. So what if all the apps dont fit at first. Given enough times things will be fixed. Things change. The developers can adapt like the rest of us.

A stretched out iphone is just pointless. What are they gonna do with the screen space? An extra row of icons? Gimme a break.. They could already make the screen longer without actually increasing the size of the phone. Granted they need a bigger battery for the extra stuff like LTE and I understand that but still.. Iphone long edition just looks stupid to me.

Downvote me all you want to. I dont care. I have always been a fan of apple products but this is the dumbest design idea since the hindenburg.
.

you sir, can no longer be down voted. Really, we just have to wait and see what the new iPhone brings....both visually and internally. I think the 4S kind of put them in a weird spot though. It is already a beast and hardware cannot really get that much better, so visually it has to be different.

I agree 100%. If they are going to be the only one who will be able to make accessories and still work with this new "dock", then at least give us the bigger screen.

So I'll have to buy a $200-$300 phone, plus if I want an extra charger or a car charger, I'm probably looking at $30 each accessory. Seems fair? HA.

It s quite binary, if iphone 5 design is that one that leaked some weeks ago, I will not buy and move to another platform period

You can never please everyone but it's possible Apple wanted to keep the single-handed usability factor high, which is something that many other OEMs seem to have missed with the mini-tab phones. Just my two cents of course.

This sounds awfully familliar. I think about 90% of people on here said this exact same thing about the past two generations and we all know how the sales went ;)

I don't see a connection between the dock and the screen size.
You can't expect your accessories to survive different generations of products in general, so I couldn't care less about a new connector.
As for the screen size, a lot of competitors have much larger screens. Obviously this allows for more estate, so you can have access to more options and information than ever. I'm not so sure why would a stretched screen be so ugly to you. And you have nothing to worry about as for fragmentation.

The criticisms to date of the upcoming iPhone are not of Apple's design, but of mockups of what people believe the new design to be
It may or may not in fact be the taller design, despite the strong rumors
Last year, most were convinced of a larger screen and a teardrop design, neither of which happened

Before passing judgment, I will wait to see what Apple actually produces
I for one, don't really care for the rumored taller iPhone, but holding one is different from viewing a mockup

While some see the cable as a problem, they also want thinner, lighter
Apple appears to be trying to meet that goal with a smaller dock
But again, we have not seen anything from Apple to truly criticize at this point

Lesbehones, Apple will charge $2-3 a cable LOL

There are always plenty of 3rd party alternatives to Apple's cables

I'm not going to get into the screen size debate, but if the dock connector does in fact change, I shudder to think of the environmental impact of millions of discarded docks, chargers, cables, stands, etc., which might not otherwise be tossed if Apple didn't have to redesign the connector. Of course, the only reason they're doing that in the first place is to make the devices thinner, based on consumers insatiable lust for ever thinner tech products.

I think the environment has bigger issues than Apple cables :)

They could have a recycling program, or trade in program. As in like, trade in your old connectors for the new one. Apple may lose out but at least it wouldn't tarnish its name too much.

I'm no tree hugging hippie, but I think this is a decent idea. At the very least, they could just have a receptacle for discarded connectors in the stores so you'd know the stuff was getting properly recycled. Hell, with Tim Cook at the helm, they'd probably even find a way to make a pile of cash from the discarded connectors.

They should provide some sort of new to old dock connector so older accessories with still work.

They'd probably charge for something like that but if they included one with the phone (doubt it), or for a very reasonable price then I wouldn't mind.

They could also have an adapter . . . which makes A LOT more sense to me.

An adaptor for my IPHONE?!
I can forgive a adaptor for my new Magsafe 2 port for my new Macbook Air, but an adaptor for my iPhone is just ....
It would look extremely weird for my phone with something extra sticking out at the dock connector which I don't need. It is just blasphemy on Apple' behalf and a disaster in the designs department.

No offences though.

Obviously, it wouldn't stay on your phone. It would stay on the dock connector end of the cord.

Methinks you're making a mountain out of a molehill . . . not like it has to stay ON the phone. It could stay on the end of your car charger . . . as an example.

I think the environment has bigger issues than Apple cables :)

You could say that about almost any environmental issue. It's the mentality that lets environmental issues become issues in the first place.

As of March 2011, Apple had sold 100 million iPhones worldwide. They sold another 37 million iPhones in Q1 of this year. That's double what they sold in Q1 of last year.

If even 25% of current owners upgrade to the next phone with a new dock connector, that's 25 million obsolete cables/docks/etc. Some will be resold, but many will not. And that doesn't account for people who own more than one cable or accessory.

A huge glut of these cables and accessories will be tossed in landfills within a month of release of the new phone. It will be a purge of wires, metal, and electronics, caused by one massively popular company, on a scale the earth has never seen. I can't even imagine what even 1 million iPhone cables would look like.

Haha I think I am  . I always thought adapters are always on the device itself...
But still. An adapter may play nice with the new Airs and RMBPS, but it wouldn't play nice with the iPhone considering each device sold must come with adapters. Unless, its another 10 dollar adapter they're asking MBA and MBP owners to fork out for their new MBA and MBPs....
