What happens? Can you just keep the handset and not upgrade to contract or what? Sure they have a way of preventing this but posting this in the hope that it may be able to be unlocked and not have to be used on the contract!

Sorry didnt make it clear. I meant if you buy online

Before the handset even leaves the online depo, the handset is activated.

Then, when you recieve it, as a customer, you plug it into iTunes,
and it asks you to setup your contract details.

I believe the phone won't function without you completing this process.
So you'll more than likely be left with the functionality of an iPod touch.

There is no way to 'get round' paying O2 your monthly line rental.

You seem to want the most expensive and most desirable phone currently on the market,
yet it seems your not prepared to pay for the cost of owning it?

This is how much it costs, for iPhone.

I want an iPhone for many reasons (have the ipod touch currently but the iphone is so much more useful and reduces clutter in pockets). I wanted it on PAYG and would pay up to £400 for the 16gb model. Don't use phones enough to warrant a contract. Bit gutted i have to wait til christmas unless i can get one any other way.

same here. i was sent an email from o2 saying that pay and go would be available from launch so my expectations were dashed.
