If you delete an app you own for space, do you lose your data or saves?

I was wondering when I finish playing a game I bought or got free on the app store and delete it, does my data and saves get saved so if I download it again will it all be there? I use iCloud for backup.

Some apps are starting to use iCloud to backup. As far as I understand, these apps wouldn't loose your progress in a game if you delete them and then install them again.

But, some apps don't use iCloud. And your regular backups won't help you recover your game progress. For example, Angry Birds doesn't use iCloud, so if you delete the game, and then install it again, you'll loose all your progress.
