I never noticed but does the iPhone not get any notifications if you are getting them on your Watch? I understand it may be pointless to have both, but sometimes I like getting a tap on my wrist (for example while typing on a keyboard) and glancing down at my phone to see who is texting me.
 
it should show on both, although you need to wake your phone's screen to see it.

It's also pretty easy to accidentally dismiss a notification on your watch, which will clear it from the phone too.
 
If you do not dismiss the notification on the watch then it should still show on your phone's lock screen. If you dismiss the notification on your watch then it will not show on the phone's lock screen nor will it show a red number on the message icon.

But my iPhone won't light up the way my watch does for notifications?
