So I bought a used 3GS on ebay. The phone arrived with a hairline crack that the seller had not mentioned in the ad! Long story short, I got the seller to knock off $40 and then called apple who agreed to replace the unit. So I ended up with a new 32GB iPhone 3GS for only $290.

Which brings me to the question: Should I get a case? I know people drop the phones catastrophically all the time, but I heard that these phones, especially with the plastic back cover, are designed to be dropped and survive. For all you owners out there: if you had to do it over, would you still go for the case?

My 3Gs is fine. Had it since day one, short answer, yes, I was rough on my phone, it is not really in Bad condition but a case/screen protector etc. would of been worth it to me. I plan to keep the IP4 I am getting in perfect condition.

I have had a black bumper since the day the 4 came out, and honestly I was getting tired of the phone. Well I just got my white Bumper today and WOW I love this phone, the different color bumper just makes the phone.:)

I have put every phone I've ever owned in a case, why would I stop now?

With companies giving trade INS based on the condition of the phone it again makes a powerful case for using a case!

True, but they're not going to price it for jailbroken and unlocked. Enjoy it naked for a year, then jailbreak and unlock before eBaying it and that'll make up for the otherwise diminished value that you'd get for a slightly worn phone.
