If I had the 1TB M4 I would have skipped the M5. The main reason why I upgraded is RAM, but performance improvement are minor (contrary to M2 to M4, but even then, who was complaining about M2?), except maybe for gaming, but I don't game. Fast charging is nice, but the current 37/38w is still decent, so it's just a nice bonus, not a reason to upgrade. As is 120hz on external monitors, since I only have a portable monitor which goes above 60hz (240), and I rarely use it. The AI stuffi is not a reason for the next couple of years.
I would have waited M6 or M7, unless my battery was struggling, which is unlikely after only 1.5 years, or to correct some mistake like not enought storage or cellular (but 256 are enough for me, and I had the cellular already).

I have an upgraded M4, and plan on skipping M5. No meaningful changes for me. Fast charging would definitely be nice to have but I’ve been fine without it since it first came out.

Like all products, it all comes down to two points

A. What you do with the product

B. The type of workflow you have.

I’m going m4 to m5 to get cellular and nano texture. If i had opted for those features on my m4 I would not be upgrading.

I'm only slightly tempted because of the cellular improvements(and improved charging speed)... I use the crap out of my 1TB cellular M4 iPP as a travel device and on the move. So the biggest impact I think I would notice on the M5 would be the updated and more efficient cellular chip.

I am a bit surprised they kept the 1TB and 2TB models at 16GB. Had they increased the RAM in addition to the other upgrades, I might have seriously considered passing down the M4 and getting an M5. Until I see more real world impact/data... I am sticking with my M4.

If they had gone to 24GB I would have splurged for the 1TB model and try to keep it for 7-8 years. But given it's only 16 I went with 12GB and will probably updates in 3-4 years (m7?). Hopefully by then 16GB will be the base and 24 the upgraded version. In a couple of generations there should also be a few more perks and, of course, a new battery (I don't count on Apple to do a battery service, they go out of their way to avoid doing that).

I got a 1TB M4 11” at launch and the expense of the M5 makes no sense for my use case. If you use the device to make money it might be a different story.

My 13” M4 1TB MBP is going to have to “limp along” for another year until I see the M6.

A skip for me. I have the 13 m4cellular with 1 tb. As I was waiting to pick up my new mb pro I played with it at the Apple store for nearly 2 hours. I am sure the video editing I do would be speedier, but outside of that and faster charging there was nothing that even remotely wanted me to upgrade. I usually do every couple of years and I was anxious to see if there was anything that would tempt me. Not a thing! I did pick up the new charging brick, that has made a world of difference for all my devices.

These things are speedy at that config. Get the new charging brick and you will knock that improvement off your upgrade list.

40% GPU uplift is never a “skip”
12GB of much faster RAM is never a “skip”
lol for most folks it can do anything different, and the experience will be basically indistinguishable for m4 models, making it a skip.

I would skip. But I am upgrading from a 13" 512GB M4 to a 13" 1TB M5 for the extra storage.
Obviously very use case dependent but for most people doubling ram will probably make a bigger difference than the CPU/GPU upgrade.

For me it's a skip. The improvements are minor and only really noticeable in benchmarks. In real life applications, yes, you may notice that your 4K video will export faster, but saving 10 seconds a month whenever I make a video is not worth the money for me.

I would say its a skip. There is a bump in performance, but the M4 was plenty for 99% and would be the better buy. Now, if Apple offered software that truly took advantage of the M5, then that would be a different story.

Wait for the next refresh.

Short answer: I’m keeping my M4 iPad for now.

Longer answer: I’m keeping my M4 iPad for a while, most likely until there is another form factor improvement or an ability gain that I value in that form factor. My M1Max MBPro is up for replacement first…

A huge skip. Apple needs to show its ai first. Then I’ll worry about chip speed. Otherwise the apps that exist on iPad don’t need it. So all this vapor chamber talk. Apple needs to show the software or apps or ai that takes advantage of it or it’s all pointless to me for now.

The M5 is a solid upgrade, but hanging on to the M4 would be my recommendation.

I was going to skip but getting tired of the 13” M4’s size and moving back to the 11” M5. Trade in value is good and the 13” on screen keyboard is too big. Doing the trade in today.
