Just wanted to throw this out in case anyone has the same problem as I did. I have a flashed 4870 in my 06 mac pro.

Snow leopard make my main hard drive un-bootable and the CD itself would not boot either (just saw background wallpaper with nothing else).

I finally figured it out and swapped back to my 7300, upgraded, then swapped the 4870 back in.
