My friend ordered late this morning and got stuck with an October 8th delivery date. He went to a RadioShack and they were taking orders. So what he did was canceled the Apple pre-order and pre-ordered it from RadioShack and now he's getting in next week.

Maybe something to try.
 
I ordered at 3:58am ET (delay was only because I couldn't change my shipping address from an old one that AT&T had on file) and then a friend ordered at 8am on att.com and I got an Oct 5 date and she got Sept 21. I was going to cancel my apple.com order and grab one on AT&T, but now I'm not eligible for an upgrade since I "used it" at apple.com.

Sigh.

I believe once you cancel on Apple's site it takes about 30 minutes for your upgrade to be available over at ATT again. That's what some others have mentioned, although I think now ATTs stock is pushed back two weeks now too.
