Just wondering how many people that own an external hard drive, use it or a fraction of it for time machine.

I've partitioned my 500Gb external into 2 equal parts - one of which is used for Time machine.

Hasn't come in handy yet, and I hope that really it never will need to be used.

Thanks guys.

Thanks for all of your replies, and I am sooo getting this!!

I bought a Western Digital 1TB MyBook pretty cheap. USB only, but thats all I need. Formatted it, and plugged it into my Airport extreme base station. It now keeps 3 Macs backed up, plus one of the Macs external HD's.
Not had to use it to recover anything as yet, and hopefully I never will. Still, it's all working nice and smoothly

Of my 4 external hard drives, one is Time Machine, two is media files, and one is manual backups of current projects.

Yes I use a Western Digital 1TB MyBook, via FW800.

Yes it has come in handy, saved my skin and sanity this week when I had to recover my hard-drive.

I love it.

nope. if i delete something i want it gone for good. time machine is like having another recycle bin.

but i do use 300gb of my 1tb firewire drive to superduper my entire hard drive every week.

Yep - I do..

I have a 1TB external USB drive that I use for both Time Machine and backing up my Garage Band working files & iTunes music. It's not super fast, but sure is handy.

I partitioned my 500 GB external into two equal parts too. However, I did use it once to see if I could restore my iTunes collection before I moved it to another drive (just in case it messed up while transferring over). I haven't used it since.

I have an external HD enclosure that holds two HDs.

I clone each week, using CCC. I alternate the HDs on a weekly basis.

I do not use Time Machine.

i have two 500gb HD's one of them is partitioned, so i left 200 GB for TM and the rest it's for my movies/tv shows/video projects and such...
