in all the years ive had a google, okay a few google homes, whilst they are smarter than Siri, they have regressed repeatedly.
A few years ago they switched off the ability to ask verbally for an alarm playing radio. before you could say 'hey google, wake me up every day with music, and then answer the questions about when and then bbc radio 1, and every day i wake up to it'. all of a sudden you could ask it verbally to play bbc radio, OR to wake you up with an alarm, but not to walke up with bbc radio, turned out it was still possible it was just moved to the less intuitive setting up a routine, which is less intuitively hidden under automations. how difficult is it to just choose one word for it and not use two contradictory words in different places of the app? call them automations or routines, pick one. not only that, you dont then choose the action of play music as it doesnt work, you choose custom.... all the sense in the world.
but anyway, had it working for months. the last few days though, instead of brit pop flowing into the room, i get google telling me that spotify can only play radio links in premium, but here is a spotify playlist called bbc, followed by some obscure metal band.. oh my head. even sayying, hey google, stop. hey google play bbc radio 1, fails.
after a bit of stress, annoyance and confusion, i found the answer ironically by googling. maybe i should have asked google, hey google, how can i get you to play bbc radio 1 every morning again like you have done for years? followed by hey google, please set google home to 'stop ****--- around with things that work'.
the answer is simple, remove bbc. used to be 'hey google play bbc radio 1' now its just 'hey google play radio 1'. how other radio 1's feel about this i have no idea.
