So that the square will sharpen the area, aswell as change the lighting. Why Apple didn't put an ISO, lighting choice feature, shutterspeed, etc, I have NO idea.

Yes... this is the tap-to-focus feature since the 3GS. Having it auto everything is convenient but I agree some manual controls would be nice. Sometimes the whole image is dark and the only way to make it brighter is to tap on a random dark area. The only problem with that is that the focus of the lens is on a random dark area.

LOL.. that made me laugh, its true, but just the wording made me laugh.

these cameras really arent anything more than novelties. If you need more functionality on a camera than what the iphone has, you need a point and shoot or dslr.
