iFixit has posted their teardown of the watch. It's really quite fascinating, and about what I expected, but it seems to put an end to the speculation that the watches might be upgradeable by swapping internal components. While the battery is accessible, things like the processor really aren't.

Despite rumors (and hopes) of an upgradable product—the difficulty of removing the S1 alone casts serious doubt on the idea of simply swapping out the internals.

When was the last time anything was up-gradable? My Epson Equity One + 8088 computer wasn't even up-gradable in 1986

I thought it was silly from the beginning, but there have been quite a few seriously people speculating about upgradeability. I think it was mostly a way to try and justify the pricing of the Edition. And while it's true that iFixit didn't do a teardown of one of an Edition model (not that I blame them), I doubt very much that Apple engineered completely different innards just for that one model.
