My daughter had the plug from an earphone jack break off inside the receptacle in her MacBook. We could see the end of it, but the jack was recessed enough inside the case that it couldn't be grabbed, even with surgical instruments. Toothpick with superglue was suggested by the Apple genius, but that didn't work and he estimated about a $500 repair bill.
She and I went to iFixit.com, found the disassembly process for getting to the I/O board nicely illustrated and explained, plucked the sucker out of there in about 20 minutes and about 40 tiny little screws. Only tool needed was a 00 phillips screwdriver (we didn't know what a spudger was, so we ignored it).
Great website. Saved us a lot of time and hassle.
