Here is a great but pretty unhelpful IKEA hack I just discovered while making lunch today. It's a really easy solution to the problem of the Mac Studio slipping around on the desk when plugging things in.

IKEA OMTÄNKSAM jar opener, silicone rubber, 15cm diameter, product # 904.239.29

It's a perfect fit under the Mac Studio's base, it will keep it stationary on a slick desk without any adhesive, and it's very thin so it's doesn't affect the Studio's height much at all. I say it's an unhelpful tip because the product has apparently been discontinued, it's completely disappeared from the internet and IKEA Customer Service can't even find it in their system.

Just letting you know in case you are able to find one in your kitchen like I did, or on the resale market in your area. Or at least it may inspire you to find a similar product that is currently for sale... (if you do, let me know, I'd like to buy more!)

Or else there is the OWC NuPad which does a similar thing.

UPDATE: I found this eBay seller with an identical looking product, $14 for a 2-pack. I spent the morning scouring Amazon and honestly there’s nothing else quite like this. Textured grip, neutral gray color, thin and perfect diameter (most other thin options are 12cm, no texture, and colorful. Which might be fine too.) It might be worth considering if you like this no-adhesive solution.

Another way of doing it. Didn’t know about this, so I resorted to purchasing below from Amazon.

Nice. I just stuck a few tiny rubber feet on the bottom of mine. Not as elegant but it works fine.

I'm trying to figure out how that pad is a jar opener. It looks like the hotpads I have to keep pots from damaging a table top. Maybe they mislabeled it and that's why it disappeared.

Anyways, I usually use clear rubber feet for something like that.

most likely the rubber provided grip on countertop surfaces to prevent the tight jar from sliding around..which it describes on the link.

looks like it fits the Mac Studio nicely. Does the ring around the bottom of the Mac Studio not have any grip?

If you use rubber feet, only 3 are required, the most stable configuration. 3 legged stools are far more stable than 4 legs. With 3, each shares the load equally.

It's really thin and flexible, I think the idea is you'd hold it in your hand and wrap it around the jar lid to give yourself extra grip on the lid when twisting it open.

I think it was an impulse buy at IKEA that just went unused in the back of my drawer TBH :)

Well hey, I found this eBay seller with an identical looking product, $14 for a 2-pack. I spent the morning scouring Amazon and honestly there’s nothing else quite like this. Textured grip, neutral gray color, thin, and perfect ~15cm diameter. Most other thin options are ~12cm diameter, no texture, and colorful. Or they are textured but much thicker, and/or too wide. Any of which you might be okay with too.

Definitely a markup compared to original IKEA price but it might be worth considering if you like this no-adhesive solution.

Thank you for this tip. Ridiculous though that Apple didn’t put a proper rubber ring on the bottom to prevent the sliding. I’m baffled that they put so much effort into engineering such an incredible machine but overlook basic things like this… Makes me wonder if they actually have people testing the devices prior to launch.

Anyway thanks again for the link, will order one.

agreed, though can't help thinking the problem is due to an overreaction to solving the legacy of the sticky and effective ring that was on the bottom of the original HomePod that left marks on surfaces... they've picked a new rubber that doesn't leave a mark, but it'd have been helpful if it also kept the Studio in one place.

I found another gray silicone pot holder option at Dollar Tree this weekend. It’s square but about the right size, the corners can’t really be seen under the Studio / Mini at normal desk sitting angles. It could surely be cut down if desired too. Not a bad option for $1.25!

(16.8cm / 6.625” square)
