i purchased ilife 08 and i want to make a back up copy on DVD. Is this something that can be done? with something like toast 8 ? if not, what app can do it?

It already comes on DVD. Why would you need a "backup"?

In any case, why not try Toast (which I suspect would work) before posting in the forum?

I don't know about 08, but I have backed up previous versions using popcorn.
